Chris Connor: The album “Free Spirits” features a collection of songs by various jazz musicians. They were arranged by Al Cohn. “Lonely Woman” was especially difficult. It was even revolutionary for jazz as an instrumental number. When I was at the Village Vanguard, there was a female songwriter, Margo Guryan. She brought me the music and asked me to sing Ornette Coleman‘s “Lonely Woman” with her lyrics. The lyrics were wonderful, and I was just preparing for the recording of “Free Spirits,” so I decided to try it out. Though it was difficult, the melody is very beautiful, and I am glad that I had the opportunity for such an adventurous challenge. [Source]
